Our Australian Junior team containing BTC Junior, Daniel Williams has proven triumphant in its campaign to win the Clothier Cup held in the US. Below is a review of the second days play. Congratulations go to all players involved for such an oustanding achievement.
Match review by Patrick Dunne
The day started at 2 matches all after the singles but our boys turned up refreshed on the second day and ready to tackle the doubles.
The first match (3&4) featured Simon Carr and Daniel Williams who played well to win their doubles 6/1 6/1 against Gordon McMorris and Patrick Haynes. The Australians jumped the Americans and gratefully took a 3/2 lead overall with calmer, more experienced doubles then the opposition.
The second match of the day was the (1&2: Hilton Booth and Pat Dunn vs. Pat Winthrop and Will Broadbent) and featured great rallies and games but the Americans proved too strong and won 6/3 6/2.
After lunch, the third doubles (2&4) got underway. Patrick Dunne and Simon Carr lining up against Will Broadbent and Gordon McMorris. Australia pulled away to a 5/2 lead and then eventually took the set 6/4. The second set didn’t quite go to plan with the Americans taking a very quick 5/0 lead as Simon Carr and Patrick Dunne switched off after winning their first set. Australia then rallied and made the scoreboard look nice but the Americans took the set 6/3. The third set went to plan for the re-focussed Australians and ended up 6/2.
The Aussies were now taking a 4/3 lead heading into the final doubles.
The final doubles featured the 1 & 3 from each team and Hilton Booth and Daniel Williams started the first set with a wet sail winning the first 4 games and then taking the set 6/1. The Americans rallied in the second and played better but the well practiced and cleaner doubles from the Australian pair won through 6/4 in a tense final set.
Australia wins 5/3!!!
The boys were pumped to come away with a win and look forward to enjoying the tournament dinner tonight and the remainder of the tour. The trophy has been found and i’m sure it will come in handy when celebrating the win.
